To the editor: Much appreciation goes out to The Times’ editorial team for featuring Dr. Peter Chin-Hong’s insightful opinion piece on December 20th, “Bird flu is coming for humans. We can either get ready or court disaster.”
Equally commendable is The Times’ thorough coverage of the ongoing spread of H5N1 throughout our state and country. This work serves as a significant public service.
Reflecting on my experiences as a physician during the most challenging periods of the COVID-19 pandemic, I find Dr. Chin-Hong’s call for heightened public awareness and scientifically valid preventive measures both timely and essential. It is crucial to prevent or lessen the impact of a potential bird flu outbreak or pandemic.
Addressing the issues encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as public indifference, anti-science attitudes, and political bias, will be key responsibilities for The Times, our elected officials, and leaders in the medical and public health sectors.

To the editor: A different approach to curbing the spread of the H5N1 flu could be for individuals to reconsider their consumption of milk from other animals. Why have we accepted the idea that drinking cow’s milk is necessary for survival?
