On Tuesday, the transition team for President-elect Donald Trump confirmed that they have reached an understanding with the Department of Justice. This agreement is a crucial step as it enables the DOJ to initiate background checks and begin the process of granting security clearances for nominees in the upcoming Trump administration.
This development arises amidst ongoing debates surrounding several of Trump’s choices for key government positions. These positions include leaders in the Defense Department, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the director of National Intelligence.
Susie Wiles, who is set to become the White House chief of staff, commented on the agreement in a statement. She noted, “The agreement with the Department of Justice ensures that President Trump and his team will be fully prepared from day one to implement the America First Agenda, which received widespread support from the American people on Election Day.”
The Trump transition team highlighted that their memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the DOJ will permit them to start submitting names for background checks and security clearances. “This process will ultimately enhance the insights available to the transition team, allowing our agency landing teams to gain the necessary information to prepare for assuming leadership of federal agencies and departments,” the team explained in a statement.
The announcement of the MOU came a day after The New Yorker published a piece alleging that Pete Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary, was involved in incidents of alcohol abuse, sexual misconduct, and mismanagement at two non-profit organizations for veterans.
