To the editor: Gene Hackman had a remarkable movie career that spanned many years, yet the mysterious circumstances of his untimely death, along with the deaths of his wife and one of their dogs, echo a Hollywood mystery film. It’s truly a sorrowful and unexpected conclusion for such an esteemed, Oscar-winning actor. Let’s hope that investigators and the autopsy report will unravel this puzzle and reveal the cause of these tragic events.

To the editor: While waiting for a Southwest flight from Albuquerque to Burbank, we were gathered in our boarding groups—A, B, and C—feeling a bit like cattle. This was before Southwest added numbers within groups. It was then that I noticed Gene Hackman among us, waiting patiently in group B. I was struck by how unassuming he was; it genuinely impressed me.

To the editor: Like so many, I am deeply saddened by Gene Hackman’s passing. He was a Hollywood icon who merited a front-page obituary. When Alan Arkin passed in 2023, his obituary was tucked into the California section without much fanfare. Like Hackman, Arkin garnered numerous accolades, including an Oscar, and played plenty of unforgettable roles. I fail to see why he didn’t receive similar recognition and front-page coverage. He was every bit as extraordinary an actor.
