On Sunday, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer discussed a collaborative effort involving European countries and Ukraine to develop a strategy aimed at halting the ongoing conflict with Russia. This plan, once formulated, is intended to be presented to US President Donald Trump as a foundation for peace negotiations.
During an interview aired on the BBC, Starmer stated, “The UK, alongside France and potentially a couple of other nations, will join forces with Ukraine to craft a comprehensive plan to cease hostilities. Following that, we’ll engage in discussions with the United States regarding this strategy.”
This announcement coincided with a gathering of 19 national leaders in London, convened to create a concerted effort in aiding Ukraine after the unfavorable meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Trump earlier that week.
While predominantly a European-led discussion, the summit also saw participation from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The majority of the meeting has been conducted privately, with plans for a press briefing scheduled for later on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, in the United States, national security adviser Mike Waltz emphasized that any resolution to the war would require Russia to agree to security compromises concerning Ukraine in return for territorial negotiations. Speaking to CNN, Waltz underscored, “The path to ending this war will necessitate territorial compromises as well as Russian assurances on security matters.”
