The Turku Tramway Alliance has chosen construction giant YIT to lead the initial phase of developing a new tramway depot and power supply stations for the Port of Turku-Varissuo line. This decision positions YIT at the forefront of planning and designing these vital infrastructure components.
YIT is tasked with managing the planning phase, where they’ll spearhead efforts to craft cost-efficient building solutions. In tandem with the Tramway Alliance team, they’ll set both a target and a cap price for the construction.
The alliance’s main collaborators include Turun Raitiotie and the City of Turku. Noteworthy service providers like NRC Group Finland, GRK Suomi, Ramboll Finland, and Sweco Finland are also playing significant roles in bringing the project to fruition.
A crucial decision on moving to the next phase rests on the conclusion of this development stage, which will be influenced by the Turku City Council’s investment decisions come late 2025.
Aimed at maintaining fiscal prudence, a preliminary budget of around €30 million ($30.64 million) has been earmarked for these constructions, with final figures to be confirmed later in the development phase.
According to Kari-Pekka Lumme, the project manager from NRC Group Oy, the alliance adopted a collaborative procurement strategy. This ensures the inclusion of building and technical service expertise from the get-go, with YIT being an obvious choice due to its impressive track record in similar depot construction projects and its cooperative approach.
YIT’s expertise isn’t new—they previously worked on the Tampere tramway and its extensions, along with the Helsinki light rail project Raide-Jokeri. Aleksi Laine, head of YIT’s Infra segment, expressed excitement over this collaboration. Drawing on their extensive depot-related experience, YIT is poised to tackle the development phase effectively, especially within the complexities of urban settings.
