Federal food regulators have issued a strong warning concerning recalled eggs sold at Costco due to potential salmonella contamination. This concern prompted them to escalate the situation to the most serious risk category.
Initially, on November 27, the FDA revealed that approximately 10,800 retail packs of organic, pasture-raised eggs, each containing 24 eggs and sold under the Kirkland Signature brand, were being recalled. This action was initiated by New York’s Handsome Brook Farms.
However, in a follow-up notice released on Friday, the FDA elevated the recall status to Class I. This classification indicates a “reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a defective product will lead to serious health consequences or even death.”
These specific egg cartons were available in 25 Costco outlets across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee starting from November 22.
The eggs in question come in trays of 24 labeled as “Organic Pasture Raised” and can be identified by the Universal Product Code (UPC) 9661910680, with a ‘best by’ date of January 5, 2025.
If you have purchased these eggs, the FDA advises returning them to Costco for a complete refund.
